Like Seren, Lindsey spent a year living very remotely and knew that using disposable menstrual care would make her life more difficult. Because she was at least two hours away from the nearest convenience, if she was unable to obtain products, she would simply not have menstrual care. This put her in a unique situation of not being able to obtain feminine hygiene products, and so she can speak to the benefits for women who also may not have access. If distance, time, or finances are keeping you from accessing disposable feminine hygiene, Lindsey knows well what that can feel like, and it is for this reason she made the switch. Luckily for everyone considering the idea of reusable products, Lindsey says that she has had such a positive experience with the cup that she does not want to ever go back to anything else.
Lindsey has now been using the organicup for a year and a half and has saved so much money, that she was able to fly back to San Antonio to visit her remote living summer camp for the cost of what she has saved on menstrual care. What an amazing amount we spend on these products! Because of her experience living in the wilderness for a year, she can testify to the benefits for backpacking and women who just love being outdoors. It is beneficial because she saves space that would normally go for pads and tampons in her suitcase and backpack when she travels. And she has no stress about where she will get her products when she is out of reach of city dwellings. As a regular swimmer, she feels better using the cup in the water than tampons.
She sometimes still uses a pad at night and occasionally bleeds through the cup, but the benefit of money saved is still so great that the cup has been a worthwhile investment. She trusts the cup and using it has made her realize that she really does not lose as much blood as she once thought. While learning to use it, she was very aware of it. But now she uses her cup without a second thought. The tail on her cup was a bit long for her, and so she trimmed it to fit her body better. This is an incredibly helpful modification to make if the cup is uncomfortable. And as long as no puncture is made to the body of the cup itself, it is not damaging to the product itself, nor does it affect the lifespan of the usage you can get out of your cup.
Lindsey does have a few tips for girls and women who are considering a menstrual cup. Firstly, she tried it while she was not menstruating. It was even more difficult to learn to remove it when she was not on her period and strongly advises that even though it may be uncomfortable while you are menstruating, you should never try this while you are not. If making the jump from a pad straight to the cup seems intimidating, that’s okay! Lindsey says it may be helpful to build up to a cup by using tampons first. And while you are learning, have a backup option in case something goes wrong or for some reason it isn’t working. Be patient with yourself and do not force yourself. You are not bound to any set pace for learning. So, practice and get comfortable with it. Lindsey is confident that with time and practice it will work out and become unnoticed. Once you get the hang of it, you will save space in your own purse or backpack and have no worries about the number of things to carry around at school or work.
